Resume Writing Tips
On average,
a recruiter will spend only 15 – 60 seconds reviewing your resume. This is why creating a resume that is precisely
formatted and showcases your qualifications as they relate to the position is so important. The following suggestions
will help you write an effective resume.
Writing your resume
• Focus on the accomplishments that show the prospective employers how you can help
them achieve their goals
• Focus on the skills and experience that will help you successfully fulfill the
requirements of the position
• Make sure that your resume provides an accurate account of your education,
experience, and accomplishments
• Provide an explanation of any gaps in your employment history
• Do
not include dates older than 10 years
• Do not include personal information such as age, hobbies, religious
affiliation, and political affiliation
• List all positions held with a single employer
• Use
action words to describe your skills, experience, and accomplishments
• Do not use jargon or slang
• Use
keywords related to the position to increase the likelihood that your resume will be found in digital databases
• Always
send a cover letter with your resume
• Develop a list of references but only submit it when requested
Formatting your resume
• Include
all of your contact information at the top of the resume (including your e-mail address)
• Use bulleted lists
to highlight skills, experience, and accomplishments
• Do not use a small font size, 11 or 12 point works
best
• Use a font style that is easy to read such as Ariel, Times New Roman, or Verdana
• Create
an easy to read resume that has wide margins and sufficient space between each line
Reviewing your resume
• Edit and proofread your resume several times to ensure
that it is flawless
• Ask someone else to review your resume for grammar, punctuation, style, and format
Submitting your resume
• When submitting
your resume via hard copy, print it on top-quality business paper (i.e., 100% cotton, 24lb weight) using a high-quality printer.
• When submitting your resume via the Internet, include your full name in the file’s name.
